Hurricane Season and Vacationing in the Caribbean

It is now Hurricane season so you may be thinking of pushing off a much needed trip to the Caribbean.   If you feel that you need a much deserved vacation away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and were thinking of going to the Caribbean in October — maybe you should not put that thought off just yet.  Although it is still hurricane season in October, the odds of your October vacation being affected by a tropical storm or hurricane is smaller than when you go in August or September.  For our safety, it’s great that weather forecasters are able to predict many days in advance if a storm has a potential to strike your destination but knowing that a storm is coming is not so great if you have to cancel or postpone your highly anticipated trip!

Because it is still hurricane season, chances of you landing a spectacular deal is prime.  October is considered “low season” in the Caribbean therefore prices are the best that you can find.  Rates will not spike up again until mid-December.  During October the crowds have thinned out and the weather is still relatively warm.  This might be a perfect scenario for you if you prefer a warm vacation as opposed to a sweltering hot one when you go in the summertime.

Sure, there may be some risks involved however with smart planning and a bit of luck; you can end up with a sunny and affordable tropical vacation.  Willing to take the risks might get you hotel savings up to 50% and much lower airfare rates.  Did I already mention that the beach will be less crowded and temperatures normally stay in the warm mid-upper 80’s?

Because there is a science to dodging the Caribbean hurricane season, there are certain islands that would still be perfect to visit during this season.    The areas that are most likely to get hit by a hurricane are those where the water warms the quickest from late spring to fall.  So if you are planning a trip to the Caribbean during hurricane season, head to the southern Caribbean where there is a lower chance of being disrupted by these tropical systems.

Every island and coastline across the Caribbean region is vulnerable to hurricanes every year.  But because the geographic span of the Caribbean is vast, you may find that even when a hurricane is affecting one area, the rest of the region is more than likely enjoying beautiful weather.

The islands to look at as you plan a visit in October would be the far southern Windward Islands of Trinidad and Tobago as well as Grenada.  The ABC islands, Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao will also be free of tropical systems or you can look into venturing to Southern Central America where you can visit Panama or Costa Rica.  St. Lucia is also in the southern Caribbean and another destination to look into. These islands are closer to the equator and generally south of most of the areas that are on a historical hurricane tract.

If it gives you more peace of mind, look into purchasing travelers insurance.  Choose comprehensive travel insurance coverage for hurricane-season travel.  A comprehensive policy has extensive benefits that give you medical coverage, baggage protection, emergency travel services, trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage.   Policies can vary depending on the insurance company.  Make sure that if you opt to purchase the trip cancellation insurance that you understand what it covers.  Will it pay when your airline or cruise line stops service due to weather?  What happens when your destination is under an issued hurricane warning alert?  What if your resort, destination hotel or vacation rental has storm damage and uninhabitable?  Can you cancel for any reason?  Make sure you find out the answers.

So now that I’ve convinced you that it might not be such a bad idea to get that tropical vacation at this time of the year, here are some deals from  Be sure to check it out as these great deals expire soon!
