Best Walking Shoes for Italy

As I get ready for our trip to Italy, it occurred to me that I should probably make sure that I have comfortable shoes to bring on our trip.  For those of you who know me—- you know I love my heels!  Given the amount of walking we will be doing on narrow, uneven and sometimes slippery cobblestone streets, I better make sure to get the right shoes to wear.

I really do not enjoy packing shoes when I travel but I realize that it is one of the most important items to consider when packing when you travel.   A good pair of shoes may not be the most exciting thing in a suitcase, but I know that comfortable feet can make or break my day and be the difference between a good vacation and a great vacation.

I have some running shoes that I can bring however, are running shoes good to use for extended walking?  I also have some sandals and ballet flats that I can bring but will my feet thank me later?  I know that I am used to walking with heels and my feet actual hurts when I wear flats that offer no support and cushioning but, I also know that I would fall flat if I had heels on (even when they’re low) while navigating cobblestone streets.  Not knowing the answer, I did some research and found out that although they may look the same, walking and running shoes are not created equal.  Some sneakers are designed for walking while others have performance features for running.

So what’s the difference and how I know what shoes would work for my trip?

We all know that when we walk, we land on our heels first, with our weight rolling forward through the ball of our foot and finally onto our toes.  When we run, we land on our outer heels with our weight moving forward in more of an S-pattern.  There is a lot more impact from running than walking since there is significantly less weight baring down on the ground when we walk.  Because of this— a good walking shoe will require less cushioning than a running shoe.  While you wouldn’t want to walk in a shoe without any cushioning, you also wouldn’t want all that added weight on your shoe due to the additional padding you will find in good running shoes. For walking, it would be best to have a lighter shoe with some cushioning that will keep your feet still comfortable without adding extra weight.

What about heel height?  I know I wouldn’t want a totally flat shoe.  When you run you usually strike the ground anywhere from the forward part of heel through the midfoot to the ball of your foot.  Running shoes should have differing degrees of built-up heels because of the impact your feet experience when you run.  Walking shoes on the other hand should have the least height differential between the heel and the toe.

When walking, our heels will have the first point of impact so I learned that I should be looking for straight or undercut heel instead of a flared heel that would be perfect for running shoes.  The straight heel on walking shoes aids with the natural forward rolling movement that occurs when we take a step while the flared heel on running shoes provide extra stability.

It is important that your shoes have some flexibility whether they are for walking or running.  Most running shoes flex at the arch or midfoot.  Since walking involves a forward rolling motion starting with your heels and ending on your toes, your walking shoes should flex at the forefoot.

A good walking shoe should be comfortable from the get-go.  It needs to be snug enough so your foot does not slip out but not so tight that it rubs and gives you blisters.  Do not buy shoes that are too snug hoping it would stretch out as you wear them.  Chances are it won’t.  I will definitely keep this in mind.  I wouldn’t want to ruin our vacation trying to break in a pair of too-tight shoes!

Make sure there is enough room on the sides to prevent calluses and blisters.  Also, there should be at least half an inch between the end of your longest toe and the shoe.  You should be able to wiggle your toes in your shoes.

I also know that I would be looking for good arch support.  Arch support is important to reduce muscle strain, maintain balance and prevent Planta Fasciitis.  Another thing that is important to me is breathability.  Knowing my feet will be in those walking shoes from early morning until I retire at night, I don’t want sweaty feet because my shoe can’t breathe.  It is important to check the material the shoe is made of and if they have vents.  Natural fibers breathe better than synthetic.  Mesh can help with being breathable and the right fit also makes the shoes more breathable. It also would be good to find walking shoes that are waterproof since we never know what kind of weather you are going to run into when you travel.  Sturdy soles and waterproof uppers will be the winner hands down!
