Last Minute Labor Day Weekend Destinations

Can you believe that Labor Day is fast approaching and yes— it is next weekend! Where did the summer go?  Pretty soon we’ll be welcoming the cold weather again.

Some of you may already have plans for Labor Day weekend from taking it easy and staying home to throwing a last barbecue party or maybe you might be contemplating going on a last minute Labor Day weekend trip as a last hurrah celebration to end the summer season.   If you are thinking you may want to go on a short trip — then you may be in luck!  There are still available travel airfare deals to some great destinations that might just work for your Labor Day weekend getaway.

According to some research on a few travel sites like Expedia, the airfare to these four destinations, are on average, the lowest priced from anywhere in the US.  So if you need a little nudge and can’t decide what you want to do for the Labor Day weekend, stop thinking and just take the plunge and choose one of the destinations below and take that trip!

Atlanta –   Average airfare is about $330 round trip

If you haven’t been to Atlanta and don’t know how to get around the city, you can check Viator and pick one of their City Tours.  These guided tours are a perfect way to see the sights, go through some of Atlanta’s hottest neighborhoods and learn about Atlanta’s history from your knowledgeable guide.  Some places you will get to see depending on the tour you sign up for would be: the Martin Luther King Jr National Historic Site, Inman Park, Fox Theater, CNN Center, 1996 Olympic Village, Midtown and Downtown Atlanta, Centennial Olympic Park, Ebenezer Baptist Church, Georgia Tech and the World of Coca-Cola Museum.

Krog Street Market

If you are into food, you may also want to visit Krog Street Market which is a colorful and eclectic center that features southern and international flavors.  Krog Street Market is home to a number of unique restaurants and food stalls where you can sample sweets or get some authentic down home chicken from local hotspot like Richard’s Southern Fried.

Los Angeles –   Average airfare is about $285 round trip

There is a lot to do in a city like Los Angeles.  You can stay in Downtown LA and sample the restaurants in the area or plan to do a hike at Runyon Canyon, the highest point in Los Angeles County) and enjoy the views of San Bernardino and Los Angeles counties from the top.  You can also head out of town to go to the beach which may be the perfect thing to do especially when the Labor Day weekend weather calls for a day by the water.  Consider checking out Carbon Beach in Malibu or Paradise Cove as chances are these beaches will not be as busy as Venice Beach and Manhattan Beach.

Again, check out Viator for tours and activities for things to do that might tickle your fancy or visit Discover Los Angeles for What to Do, How To Explore and Where to Stay while in Los Angeles.

Chicago –   Average airfare is about $265 round trip

I wrote a blog about our long weekend trip to Chicago.  You can click here to read it again.  Because Chicago is so easy to get to from anywhere in the US and because there are 2 major airport hubs in this city, you are sure to find flight deals from where you are.  In addition to doing what we did during our Chicago trip you can also go to one of the beaches like Oak Street or North Avenue where you can swim in Lake Michigan or just lay out or sit outside in a nearby restaurant and enjoy a cocktail or two!  And because the food scene in Chicago is amazing — I won’t blame you for traveling to Chicago just to eat the whole holiday weekend!

Denver – Average airfare is $290 round trip

You can come to my city this Labor Day Weekend.  Visit the foothills during your stay.  The Denver foothills are packed with some of Colorado’s best sights like Red Rocks Amphitheater, one of the best outdoor music venues on earth.  You can also take a drive and follow the Lariat Loop to Lookout Mountain where you can take in and enjoy the sweeping views of Denver and the Front Range.  This area is also the final resting place of Wild West legend, Buffalo Bill so you can also pay your respects while here.  On your way back down the mountain you will go through the town of Golden where you will find the home, since 1873, of Coors Brewery where you can sign up for a tour of the brewery and taste beer along the way.

Other things to do and consider would be a visit to Mt. Evans or a drive south to Colorado Springs and stop at the Garden of the Gods which you will find is a geological heaven and is considered the best park in the country and the 3rd best park in the world by TripAdvisors 2013 Travelers Choice list.  While in Colorado Springs stop at Pikes Peak, the highest summit of the southern front range of the Rocky Mountains, definitely a fourteener standing at 14,115 feet.

A great resource to get more ideas on what to do while in the Mile High City is Denver’s Convention & Visitors website.  This site has a page dedicated to Labor Day festivities and events  packed full of inside information that will surely give you a summer finale to remember

Now that I’ve given you 4 wonderful destinations to consider for the upcoming Labor Day weekend, don’t take too long to book your flights.  You don’t want to miss out on these low airfares.
